Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010

This year was much like last year. My mom is here again. And we didn't do anything of great importance today. In fact, we really didn't get out of the house much. We were hoping to see the sun, but that was a bust. So we just hung out and colored. A lot! My son is a coloring fiend. Not much else to say on that.

We were talking at dinner about "Bee-Bo" (I misspelled this last time I wrote about it!) and my Mom was a little lost. So after dinner we sent her into the den with John to read the Belly Button Book. Then she understood. They read a few more books, then it was on to other things to play with.

I think John finally caught onto how to use the Tag Junior Reader. But that was only after we reminded him not to turn it off again right after he'd turned it on. I'd made the mistake of showing him the on/off button a few days ago. Now that's all he wants to do. But Mom and I convinced him to push it only once and then he proceeded to put the reader on each picture, just like he'd seen me do a couple of days ago. Smart cookie! He didn't need to be shown again. But he still likes to turn it off best!

For the record, we celebrated here with cupcakes and a wine from a winery called Cupcakes Vineyard. And I'm sure we'll be in bed before the clock strikes midnight!

It's the last day of 2009. I'd set a goal last year of taking a picture everyday (and blogging about it). And while I missed a few days of blogging (because of m vacation), I did take a picture every single day. Most of them were just a record of our days and focused on JHP. Readers of this blog are probably thankful for that. They've seen a baby grow into a little boy. One of the reasons to take a picture every day was to improve my photography and I think I've succeeded. I feel much more in control of the photos I'm taking and I'm happy with most of them. There are still plenty that I delete, but most are good enough that I share them with you on the WebAlbums. As for 2010, I'm not so sure I'll blog everyday. Some days I've felt obliged to regurgitate the day and on those days, I've felt burdened. Other days, I have plenty of little things to share. I think I'll take it one day at a time in 2010. I'm sure that most days you'll see a post, but don't be disappointed if I miss a day here and there. Happy New Year!

What's in there?

We went to lunch today just to get out of the house. It was a dreary, rainy day. We'd slept in and played around the house all morning. Then we went to Jason's Deli for lunch. JHP moved to fast for my little point and shoot. But Daddy sat still and I got this nice shot of him.

JHP went down for a nap after lunch and Mom and I went to the mall and did some shopping. We really just went in search of some Lego Duplo train track at the Lego store, but they were out and I had to order it. Then we hit some other stores and happened upon a really great sale at one store. I also bought a purse, something I hadn't done in over three years. I'm not a purse-a-holic like some women and I don't buy super expensive purses but they aren't cheap either. We'd joked around about me buying a new one since JHP is still using my little brown one at a sack for things from time to time. Daddy made reference to that when I told him I'd bought a new purse. It's a good enough excuse, I guess.

John had just woken when we returned. And he was not in a good mood. A little rocking by Momma helped. Along with a little snack. And some coloring. But when it was time for dinner, the crying returned and he asked to go to his bed for a while. So we did. He needed more time there than he thought, but afterwards, he'd righted his attitude for dinner. And he ate.

We'd had this bag of goodies that one of his classmates had given John before school let out. It was just sitting around. So I figured that we'd check it out. And he did. He found the good stuff (pretzels, teddy grahams, M&M's) and we tossed the rest.

I'm not real sure what he was saying here. But he had a message, I'm sure. Isn't this face priceless?

Nana's here

We went to the airport this morning to get Nana. John was happy to see her as she came down the stairs and he ran to give her a hug. We had some lunch and then came home to relax before nap time. Mom and I went to the store while he slept and visited some more when we got home. When John finally woke, he asked about Nana and even had to go see her. He's enjoying having her here and enjoying even more someone else to pay attention to him.

Before dinner we opened the gifts that Nana and Papa Jim had gotten John for Christmas. They were here at the house the whole time, but I figured we'd wait until she was here to open them. He had plenty of other stuff to play with. As you can see from his reaction above, he knew exactly what that was as soon as we opened it. And, of course, it had to immediately be removed from the packaging so John could play with it. The other toy he got was a race track for cars. He seemed to really like that too. Somehow I missed pictures of that.

After dinner, it was back to his little table for more coloring. Mom and I had bought some more coloring books and he made good use of them tonight. And I found some other crayons that I'd forgotten I bought. He thought they were cool because they were just like the ones at MawMaw's house. He never really left the table. We just colored until it was time for a bath. I still can't believe that he sits there for that long.

Mom did say she thought that John's speech had come along quite a bit from when she saw him just a month ago. He really attempts conversation and puts all kinds of words together. He's still parroting quite a bit. He even repeated the word "crap" today. Oops!

Going home

The weather made the trip to the airport a little more fun. We got stuck behind a snowplow on the way to the Interstate, but still made it to the airport in plenty of time. But getting out at the airport, it was blasted cold. Bone chilling cold. I was only outside for a few minutes and it took me just as long to warm back up, in my coat, in the airport. Brrr! I think we came home just in time. Although, I was pretty disappointed when the pilot told us on the plane that it was only 34 in Houston. I thought (and said aloud) "That's just wrong!" Anyway, we let John burn some energy and he had great fun running up and down the aisle in the terminal. It was pretty quiet at the airport so we didn't have to worry about losing him in the crowds.

I tried to get a picture of Daddy and John, but he didn't want to stop long enough and he was more interested in my lap. So I handed the camera over and Dad snapped a couple of John and me. John behaved pretty well on the plane. He did get a bit anxious to get moving while we were de-iced. There was only so much to read and he wanted the DVD player on. But we had to wait. The only other time he was totally not listening was when it was time to buckle up for landing. I actually had to give him a little spanking. I'm pretty sure it didn't hurt because he didn't cry, but he knew I meant business and he did straighten up after that and allow me to buckle him in.

Our "chauffeur" Renee' picked us up at the airport and we took her home. When we got there, we went to visit her chickens. John was timid at first, but soon decided he wanted to try to feed the chickens some weeds. He even called one of the chickens by name after just listening to us talk about them. And was he excited when they took some dandelion green from him. Where was the camera? In the car! Bad Momma! Oh well.

We deliberated over what to do next. I figured we'd better get some food in him and then worry about a nap. So we stopped for some sandwiches and fed John. Well, we tried. He wasn't much interested in the sandwich I'd packed for him that morning. But he did drink all his milk and had some pretzels and chips. Oh, and one grape. Anyway, I decided I'd hand over the blankie and paapaa just to keep the car quiet and him happy. We'd deal with how long he slept later. He did fall asleep for about 30 minutes or so and woke near the house. He seemed open to the idea of continuing his nap in his bed. So I laid him down. He woke 2 hours later. Happy. And excited to be home with all his own stuff to play with. He did get quite upset when it was time for bed. But I think he just wanted to color some more. And when he didn't get his way, he could quite control his emotions. We managed to get him ready for bed and he was happy to be there.

Snowy Sunday

We (Grandpa, Karen, James, us, & Bev) all went to church this morning, although John didn't make it very far into the service. On the way in we ran into some of the ladies from the church in the hall and they all gushed over John with proud Grandma standing by. He didn't pull his usual shy, hide-in-Momma routine. Instead, he batted his eyelashes and smiled his best smiles. And they were impressed! We went down and played in the nursery while PawPaw preached his sermon. Afterward we went to Olive Garden for a nice lunch. It had started to snow while we were in church and continued most of the day. When we returned from lunch, we spent some time visiting before it was nap time. John and MawMaw read some books. While reading the Belly Button book, he got real silly saying Be Bu and gave himself the hiccups (this is not too hard to do really). We said our goodbyes to Karen and James and to Grandpa who was being taken to his home on their way home. It was an emotional time, as goodbyes always are.

John took a marathon nap and woke up to lots of snow, although he couldn't see it too well because it was mostly dark by the time he woke. Tom had trudged out to get the paper when it lightened up a bit, leaving his footprints in the snow. It was a pretty snow for most of the day, then it got quite heavy. I'm sure we had 3-4 inches, at least. The rest of the day was filled with dinner and playing and packing. Tomorrow we go home. Hopefully the flights and weather cooperate.

We talked a lot this week about how John's words and sentences have improved. He was seriously a parrot the last several days. He's saying "no way" WAY too much. I need that replaced ASAP! Bev asked me if I could tell how his speech had changed and when I thought about it, I was kind of amazed. I think one of his first three word sentences happened over Thanksgiving. And this week, he put FIVE words together. He really trying to have a conversation and you can see the wheels turning when he's trying to get something out of his mouth. Every once in a while, it's gibberish (and he knows it!), but mostly it's words you use every day. And he's using them correctly. I'm sure the teachers at school next week will let me know just how far he's come. Or even my Mom who's coming this week might notice the difference since we saw her fairly recently.

Don't know much else. We've had a great time here and I can't believe the week has flown by so fast. I was really dreading being gone so long from home, but it really worked out nicely. We had plenty of busy time, plenty of down time and little-to-no terrible toddler time, which really made things so much nicer. I'm sure we'll be happy to sleep in our own beds tomorrow, especially after all the travel.

More snow

After we all gathered for a great breakfast of Grandpa's French Toast and brown sugar syrup (which John wouldn't even taste - but he did learn the word "delicious" from Uncle James), we all said our good-bye's to the Rodenmeyers who had to get on the road to see their other grandpa in Missouri. The weather was quite cold and windy this morning. It had snowed overnight just a bit. So since John looked like he was pining away at the door, I figured I'd take him outside to explore. He was less timid this time about the snow and we even climbed up the stairs to the tree house in the backyard. I took this as John was peeking back inside from the "back porch" of the little house. I'm just loving this picture! We continued to wander around the back, side and front yards until John got a little fussy and wanted me to hold him. Since I wasn't going to tote him around, we went inside to warm our hands and cheeks. He was definitely ready.

John really warmed to Uncle James and climbed right up in his lap several times today. Although, I suspected from the start of this time, he was really after the glasses and I was right. I know I posted one of these yesterday, but I couldn't resist posting another. Too cute!

And since Andy's glasses were too far away, we tried them on John, too.

Some of us went to eat lunch out today and then we went to a movie. Daddy, John and Andy came home after lunch and enjoyed a quiet afternoon. After the movie (The Blind Side - really good, btw), Susan departed. A little while later Andy left, leaving just us, Grandpa, MawMaw & PawPaw, and Aunt Karen and Uncle James. And right before dinner, Karen and James went back to the hotel. The house became rather quiet with only John's chatter to liven the place up.

MawMaw took advantage of the quiet time to read some books to John. He'd been so stimulated this weekend that sitting still for a book was a very rare occurrence. There was too much to do and too many folks to entertain. But the time together was just what they both needed, I think.

Leisurely Christmas

We had a nice leisurely Christmas day with plenty of time for sharing, visiting and working on puzzles. I think we all ate too much for Christmas dinner, but the tenderloin was so good, none of us could resist seconds (or thirds!). John was a lot more hesitant today than yesterday, but only became more demanding of his paapaa after his nap. We tried to hold out but I figured I'd rather him interacting with everyone than screaming for his paapaa. We'll fight that another day.

Saint Nicholas visited our house last night and left JHP some fun little things in his stocking. He got a couple of Matchbox cars, a kazoo, a harmonica, some new bath duckies, and some M&M's. Surprisingly enough, the M&M's remain unopened tonight. He must not realize the little figure has M&M's inside. He really liked the kazoo, but he's so good at it, we had to put it up periodically to save all our minds. He thought the harmonica was a phone and still hasn't quite gotten a hang of how it really works, but if it wasn't a challenge he'd be bored. When he saw the duckies, he immediately wanted to go take a bath and had to be convinced that he could play with the duckies without water.

Uncle James was able to entice John into playing with him even though John was in an "I need Momma" kind of mood. And while they were having fun playing with tools, John discovered Uncle James' glasses. He got the biggest kick out of wearing them around. Of course, he kept looking down so he could actually look THROUGH the glasses. I guess he was kind of fascinated by the change he saw.

I'm not sure where John picked it up, but his phrase for the week is "No way!" Oh, how I can't wait until we banish that form his vocabulary. I'm already tired of it.

Christmas Eve with the Pitchers

The day started out pretty good. We got some breakfast and while JHP was busy watching the Imagination Movers, Daddy and Grandpa made his secret recipe "Chex Mix". Daddy was the brawn of the operation while Grandpa was the brains.

John and I joined MawMaw on a trip to the grocery. It wasn't the most pleasant trip. John whined the whole way there about his paapaa (or really, the lack thereof), but he was fine in the store. And then he whined the whole way home. I was just about strung out by the time we made it into the house. He was obviously hungry and just couldn't deal. He managed to eat most of his lunch in between sucks on the paapaa, not a behavior we often condone, but desperate times call for desperate measures. He did take a decent nap and was in a good mood the rest of the day.

Aunt Susan got John a 4 foot fire engine puzzle for Christmas. It took Daddy, Susan and Laura some effort to get it together and show John, but he seemed more interested in the puzzle that the adults were working on. It's the same one we started (and never finished) last November when we were all together. A real challenging one of 1000 pieces and lots of the same colors all over. The first piece JHP picked up was one Laura and I had been looking for for quite a while.

MawMaw and PawPaw got John a Little People Farm and a Lego Duplo Thomas the Train for Christmas. He enjoyed both of them tonight, and I'm sure he'll enjoy them much more in days to come. Aunt Celia, Uncle Dale, Laura, and Amanda got John some Sandra Boynton books. I'm so sure those will become staples in the reading rotation when we get home.

Since John's been going on and on for weeks about Jesus' birthday, I made some cupcakes today for us to celebrate. We lit one candle and sang Happy Birthday Jesus. And then John and Daddy blew out the candle. He was most excited and wished to sing again later. So we did.

As you can see he enjoyed his chocolate frosting right from the start. I didn't even see how he managed to get it on his nose. He was so quick about it. Unlike most kids, he did eat some of the cupcake, although Daddy had to help him with the fork. John still doesn't like to have messy hands. I hope I didn't make him that way, but cleaning his hands a million times when he was younger.

Everyone else went off to church. Service was late and we thought it best to have John in bed on time. We are supposed to play our Dirty Santa game after church is out, but that might just get put off until tomorrow. I'll fill you in then about anything else I miss reporting tonight!

Visiting family and friends

We took off on our road trip today to see family and friends. Our first stop was JNP's aunt Donna and uncle Dale that he hadn't seen in 12+ years and I'd never met. A surprise was his cousin Jennifer also came to visit us and brought her son Owen. Jenny, as John called her growing up, is the closest in age of all his cousins and when he was young he told his Mom that he was gonna marry her. JHP was in a good mood and was only a little shy at first. Once he found some toys and a new buddy to play with, he was just fine. Our visit was a little short, but we had to make do with our allotted time. John would be needing a nap all too soon. We'll definitely have to see them again on our next trip to Ohio.

Next up was my friend Ronda and her family. They only live about 30 minutes or so from John's relatives, but we didn't have a map, missed the turn off because there was no apparent sign, and ended up going the long way to their house. Finally we made it and had some lunch. Poor JHP was asking for milk the minute we hit the car. He must have been ravenous by the time we finally ate. He ate his lunch, but then was most interested in playing with Ronda's daughter Vivienne. They had much fun together. Inside. Outside. Upstairs. Downstairs. And lots of tickling. Again the visit was too short, but John was ramping up the silliness, a sure sign of an impending crash. A nap would be needed VERY soon. We said our goodbyes and by the time we made it back to I-70, he was down for the count. He slept almost the whole way (about 1 3/4 hours), waking only as we turned for the last couple of miles before arriving home to the house. He was quite happy to be home at MawMaw and PawPaw's house.

The house was full of (Great) Grandpa and 3/4 of the Rodenmeyers when we arrived. John was content to sit in Daddy's arms for quite a while. While sitting there, John quizzed him on who was sitting around and sure enough he could produce all the names of these not-so strangers. I think that exercise really helped him warm quickly and before too long he was making his way around to most everyone. Susan and Laura eventually joined us as did Andy. There was no drama and we all had a very pleasant evening. John had great fun playing around and moving from lap to lap. He put up no fuss about taking a bath or getting ready for bed and happily ran around giving good-nights to all his family.

I can only say that today far exceeded our expectations in terms of John's behavior and attitude. We had little to no meltdowns and those we did have were easily averted with the DVD player in the car. We can only hope this continues throughout most of the rest of the trip.

Snowfall and sledding

We all slept pretty well and didn't wake until about 800a. I was thinking it was much earlier because it seemed so dark still. As it turned out, we woke to a nice little sprinkling of snow. John was pretty fascinated by it and enjoyed looking out the windows to see the falling snow. We had breakfast and played for a while. Then Daddy decided it was time to go explore the snow with John.

BY the time they made it outside, the snow had stopped and the sun was peaking out from behind the clouds. Before the day was over, some of the new snow had melted and the temperature had risen slightly. JHP wasn't so sure about the snow. He spent some time in the corner of the porch just looking. Finally Daddy carried him over to the stairs to the playhouse and showed him how the snow was just covering the steps and the grass. He seemed to accept it and did dredge through some snow on his own. Daddy made him a snowball and he had fun just dropping it on the ground.

Later, they came back on the porch and PawPaw came outside. He brought Daddy's sled from when he was a kid. John wasn't so sure about the sled and Daddy explained that it was a snow wagon and plopped him down on top of it. Daddy and PawPaw took turns pulling John around the driveway on the sled. And I think John even enjoyed it. I went to take a shower, but Daddy reported that JHP was ready to go back outside as soon as they'd some indoors.

Several Christmases ago when we were still exchanging names in the Pitcher family, I'd drawn Tom's name. Since he wanted some tools for Christmas, in addition to a Sear's gift card, I also got him a little Home Depot toy tool set. Well, we broke that out today and John LOVED it. Of course, he called most of the tools by their names on Handy Manny. He must have played with that tool set off and on all day long. I'm not sure he played with much else today. I'm sure the Handy Manny tool box sitting at home under the tree will be just as loved.

We drove over to see JNP's friend from college and his three boys today. They'd never met JHP because they last time we'd seen them was two years ago at Christmastime. It was a wild and crazy time as all the boys had fun getting to play together. Of course, we stayed out past JHP's bed time and that resulted in some crying during the bath. He'd had a good nap today, but I guess that doesn't count for much. When it's time for bed, he's ready.

Tomorrow we'll take another road trip and be gone most of the day. Hopefully John will nap in the car. And when we get back to the house, we'll be greeted by a houseful of family. Let's hope that doesn't throw John for a loop. The time here so far has been pleasant with little to no "I need my Mommy!" going on.

Going to MawMaw & PawPaw's house!

We were mostly on time this morning and made it to the airport in enough time to allow JHP some time to run some energy off in the terminal.  It was pretty crowded, but he still managed to run (and put a smile on people's faces!).  The plane left a little late, but John actaully did much better than last time in terms of staying in the seat under the seatbelt.  Even with lunch and a DVD, he did not sleep at all on the plane.  The best part of the whole airplane / airport experience was seeing John running down the terminal and into MawMaw's waiting arms.  I knew he was excited, but I didn't know just how much.  One stranger who was walking beside us when this all transpired said I should have taken a picture.  I know you'll find it hard to believe, but I had two cameras, one with video, but they were neatly packed away.  We'll just have to tuck this memory away in our minds.  It was really pretty cool!

We prevented John from sleeping in the car and did lay him down when we got to MawMaw & PawPaw's house.  He was quiet for about an hour or so, but I'm not sure he slept.  Soon after he got up we had dinner and he tried to charm the pants off our hosts.  It's really hard to discipline when the grandparents are giggling away at his antics.  But I guess we parents will just keep toeing the party line and let the grandparents (and the rest of the family) enjoy the show.

It didn't take long for John to discover the box of toys MawMaw had assembled.  She even got him some new crayons and some extra large coloring sheets.  I think he went through three sheets alone tonight!  We might need more if he keeps up this pace.  It still amazes me the concentration with which he attacks his coloring.

Overall, he's been in a good mood and has not felt the need to be attached to me at the hip.  This might change as the house gets busier, but for now, he's fine.  The weather here is cold (mid 30's) with a little snow on the ground and I don't think John has asked yet to go outside, but there's always tomorrow.  As for tomorrow, our plan is to try to go see one of John's friends from high school / college.  Hopefully, our little one goes with the flow!

Just like Christmas

We had Christmas at our house today. While JHP was napping, John and I opened gifts since we might have want to bring our gifts on the trip. This picture was taken with my gift - a new Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens. I played a bit with it today, but can't wait to play more. It's definitely going on the trip. John's playing with one of his new gifts, a Kuereg coffee machine (which is too big to go on the trip). He was most excited about it. I might have actually bought him something that he'll use this year. John did ask me to explain why he was in such a nice white t-shirt for this picture. JHP got crayon on the shirt Dad wore to church and we had to treat it. Thank goodness for washable crayons!

Jimmy, Jane and Ena came over this afternoon to exchange gifts. June has decided that she wants to be called by her first name, Ena, from now on. She'll answer to June, but we tried our best to oblige her request. JHP slept until almost 500p when I went to wake him up. He actually woke in a good mood and was happy we had visitors. We all got some cools gifts from the Buckleys. Among other things, Daddy got an astronaut pen, I got a floating pen, and John Harrison got a Tag Junior (which he identified by name, I think), a keyboard that looks like an alligator, and a new space duck.

I think he'll like them all once he gets a chance to sit and play with them a bit. The Tag Junior will take some work on Mommy's part and then John will have to experiment to learn how it works. And thankfully, the keyboard has a volume setting.

Unfortunately, he'll have to wait to play because we leave tomorrow for Indy. We've decided against taking the car seat on the plane. We might regret this once we get airborne, but at least we'll have more room and won't have to lug it through the airport. I'll certainly let you know how that goes. We've got a busy stay planned and will get to see lots of family and friends. I hope and pray that JHP tolerates the plane ride well and that he handles the transition to a new place and new faces easily. I think I need to check my expectations at the door and just go along for the ride. We might all be much happier that way. I'll keep you posted.

John's Christmas presents

BREATHE! Looks funny, huh! I'm not real sure what he was doing. But he was watching Daddy move leaves.
Daddy spent some time this morning raking the large pile of leaves (and a few scrawny bits of grass) that were in the back yard. We don't remember having this many leaves last year, but last year wasn't normal because of IKE. John and I goofed around while Daddy worked.

And when we went back inside, John took up his spot at his NEW favorite place, his table and chairs that we gave him for Christmas. Daddy and I put it together this morning as John was watching TV. We managed to get the table together and most of one chair before John came looking for us. I guess we were being too quiet! Anyway, once we got one chair together, we set John down at the table with some crayons and a coloring book and he went to town. He spent most of the rest of the morning coloring, when he wasn't being distracted by the vacuuming that went on after the chairs were assembled.

He did take a break to say "Cheese!" for me. Thankfully, he's not bothered by the fact that he's already colored on most of the pages in the two books he has. I guess I need to hit some sales after Christmas and buy a couple more.

John's other Christmas present from us is a portable DVD player. We decided that we'd better invest in one. They are so handy to have and hopefully will keep John occupied on the plane.

Tonight is date night, which explains the early post. We don't have anything special planned tonight. Just a night out to ourselves. I might pop back in and edit this post if the exchange with the sitter is less than fun.

Discovery green

We went to a park downtown called Discovery Green with our friends Laura and her son J this morning. This was the only day this week where the sun actually shone brightly all day. And the temperature reached into the mid 60's. It was so wonderful in the sun! The park has lots to do and see. I'd like to go back in the summer when John could play in the fountains. This time of year they have ice skating, but he's too young so we didn't do it. And they had this display of giant globes decorated in various conservation awareness themes. John was not lost on the fact that they represented the earth and he called it so.

We took a break to watch this giant tethered balloon. It would go up for about 10 minutes and then come back down again. It seemed kinda small looking up from the ground when it was high in the air, but in reality it was quite large.

They had several things that were new and different to John in the children's play area. And he enjoyed his time there. He did get a little strange when one little girl came up and, I guess, wanted to play with him. He started shrieking, like she was taking a toy from him. Maybe he felt his space had been invaded. Needless to say, the little girl did not understand why he was shrieking at her. John was in pretty good spirits and listened pretty well to me. He only started to get fussy about the time for lunch and when it was nearing his nap. Both boys fed off each other in the car and made lots of racket on the ride home. We really need to work on John's use of his inside voice. He only has two volumes, it seems, and neither one is especially quiet when he gets excited.

We spent the last remains of daylight walking to get the mail and then checking out the poor frost-bitten plants on the back patio. And then we discovered the lovely yellow leaves that the cold had produced on our Bradford Pear trees, although most of those leaves have fallen already. Daddy's decided that raking leaves will be on his To Do list this weekend. I tried to get John to play in the leaves, but he didn't quite get the hang of tossing them up. So Daddy came to my rescue and I got a couple of shots. My technique needs some work, however. Maybe we'll play again tomorrow before we rake.
