Reading the Bible

Today at school, John learned about Daniel in the Lion's Den, except he kept calling the boy Jonah. And regardless of how many times I corrected him, he still had to ask me what the boys name was when he went to tell Daddy about it tonight.

We went to the grocery after I picked him up from school. I packed him lunch and as we shopped, he ate and we talked about his day. When he told me about the Bible story they'd discussed, I told him we'd read about it in his Bible when we got home. So before quiet time, he and I sat down to read his Bible and the story of Daniel and the lions. Coincidentally, the story of Jonah was next in the book. So we read that, too. John opted to take his Bible with him to his room for quiet time.

I wasn't quite sure that John would ever settle down this afternoon. His quiet time was not silent. I heard him talking and reading. I even heard a thump or two. But as it was close to time's up, I let it slide. When time was up it was silent in his room, so I opted to let him be for a bit. We've been keeping a close eye on the length of any naps since as of late it has seriously impacted his ability (or want) to fall asleep anywhere near bedtime. When I finally went into his room, this is what I found. So sweetly laying there, obviously fallen asleep reading. This is so totally not my son. And I guess that's why I find it so endearing. He was totally out, dead to the world. I snapped off 15 photos and he never even flinched. I tickled his nose, ear, mouth. No movement. I was actually beginning to worry. But he was breathing. I think it took me about 10-12 minutes to wake him.

And tonight before bed, he wanted to read more stories from his Bible.

Where is John?

Sunday when Daddy went in to wake John from his nap, it appeared at first glance that John was not present. Closer examination revealed a boy buried under all those stuffed animals. A very sweaty boy!

Aftermath of Quiet Time

We've rebranded the afternoon nap once again: Quiet Time. The Native goes through periods of dislike with this tradition. So it got a new name. It's been called this before in an effort to make it not so much about sleeping, even though that's what I want him to do. It was a couple of weeks ago that we made this change. And now he's back to sleeping some during this period. He seems to go through periods of rebellion, where he refuses to settle enough to sleep. The only rules for quiet time is that he has to be quiet and stay in his room. He can get out of his bed and play or read. Some days it's obvious that he plays more and sleeps less. This is what I found when I went in to wake John on Friday. Do you think he was lonely?

Different day, different mode of transportation

But the same pullover.  And some nice smiles.

And since he tried to take a big spill on the tricycle, I thought we'd better get the helmet out.

Enjoying the weather

It seems such a long time since John and I went outside near sunset, waiting for Daddy to come home.  Oh, and taking some photos in the lovely light.
John got to ride his motorcycle, although he still struggles to reach the pedals at times.  I actually noticed him often choosing to push himself with his legs instead of pedaling.
My favorite shot of the evening.  And not once did he tell me to stop taking pictures.  That was so nice of him.  He's usually trying to control the situation, these days.

Happy, Happy Birthday, E!

On Saturday we drove to Lake Charles to celebrate with this little guy!  E turned ONE on January 18.  He's such a happy, happy kid and didn't seem concerned at all about the hoopla.  It was such a different experience from the last First Birthday party I was at - my own son's.  He was knee deep in the throes of separation anxiety.  And refused cake for 5 days.  As you can see, E had no trouble with his cake!

One is always concerned about how the parents will react when you buy their kid a drum for his birthday.  I KNEW my son approved.  After all, he helped me pick it out and then carried it around Target on his neck, drawing attention from all the other shoppers, drumming with his hands.  And as soon as it was out of it's packaging at the party, he was at it again, demonstrating just how it could be worn.
The moment of truth came when little E finally got his turn.  His mommy and daddy (seated behind him)missed seeing this face!  And some of the others he made during his first experience with the drum.  Here's hoping they see lots of other faces of enjoyment while he plays with his new noisemakers.  They told me it could stay.  But I heard something about payback, too.  I guess we'll soon see...

And Amy - don't worry, I'll have the photos up soon!  Promise!

The next day

Before school the next morning, the kids had time to enjoy each other's Leapsters.  I'm not sure how that's spending quality time together, but it worked for them.  And I didn't hear any squabbling.

A day off - sort of

On MLK day, we hosted June since they were both out of school and because Jimmy had neck surgery.  All around it was a decent day, if you discount the 30 minute tantrum that some son of mine threw over not getting the cup he wanted (and then not getting the snack he wanted followed by not wanting anything to do with June or me which was followed by not wanting to go to the grocery).  June rolled her eyes at the extent of the tantrum and I really don't blame her.  I felt the same way.  But it was just more of the same we'd experienced in the few days before.  For whatever reason, things had changed and John became extremely emotional at the drop of a hat.  It was such fun.  Not really.  And while I got this tantrum, Daddy managed to get the previous two, and he didn't handle them as well, requiring Mommy intervention.  I'm hoping we all learned something in the process.

After making it to the store and eating some lunch, we managed to sneak outside for the fresh air, something that always seems to make John happier.  We took a long walk / ride and then once we were back at the house, the real fun came running through the puddle that always forms on our side walk.  It had been a dreary few days and so being outside was a treat.  And we even lucked into some sunshine when the sun made an appearance a bit later.

After hard play, quiet time was in order.  Thankfully, John did nap.  He really needed it after the drama and activity of the day so far.

The evening was kind of a blur.  After nap, the kids played.  Daddy came home.  We ate.  Played some more.  Then it was bath time.  The original plan did not call for June to stay with us overnight, but she did as Jane couldn't break away from Jimmy quite yet.  The surgery had run late.  Finally after getting both kids bathed and into bed, the house was quiet again.  Ahh... Our day off was more than I bargained for, but we all survived.  We'll have to do it again soon.

A new contact

We had our first Skype today with Great Aunt Celia. Great Aunt Susan happened to be visiting and so we got to see her, too. It was great to see them. John enjoyed singing Happy Birthday to Susan - multiple times (her birthday was yesterday). John was a bit more attentive than normal, but I suspect it was because we hadn't Skyped with them before.

The rest of the day was spent doing stuff around the house, including FINALLY putting the Christmas decorations away. We'd gotten the tree undecorated last week, but stuff never made it to it's rightful place. Now it has. After nap we went to dinner with Daddy's carpool buddy and his wife. John just loves Kevin and he managed to charm Shannon.

The evening turned sour when it was time for bath. It was Daddy's turn to bathe John. But twice this week, John has totally lost all control of his emotion when it was Daddy's turn. It resulted in lots of crying, some discipline, and me having to intervene - both nights. Not how any of us wanted to spend part of our evening. I only hope this phase passes soon.

Snapshots of the day

Breakfast: It's not often that John eats any banana, much less a whole one. Today was one of those days and he even allowed me some photos. He did fuss at me when I stood on a chair to take some photos. "You aren't supposed to stand in chairs!" Sorry!

After dinner: JHP and I went shopping today and bought Daddy a strap for his Paper Jamz guitar. Since it was out, both John and Daddy played with it a lot tonight.

Bath: I'd actually already downloaded the photos for today when I saw this shot I wanted. During the shower if he's got the cup, he always wants to fill it and dump it, only to start right over again filling it. But what caught my attention today was how he had his face directly in the stream of the shower and how the water was running down in two streams off each eyelid.

Today's photos were all shot at 1600 ISO without flash and all were polished in LR3. I opted to shoot this way today to learn more about shooting in low light.

I'll cry if I want to!

Waking up from nap wasn't bad today, but not getting his way resulted in intermittent tears that he couldn't seem to control.

Because just as soon as we'd wipe his tears and blow his nose,

he'd be right back to the crying.
It took several cycles before we could distract him out of the crying jag.

Mirror, Mirror

While I was cooking dinner, the boys played with Legos. And played and played until time for supper.

Showers are still the thing to do for rinsing after bath these days. While he is bouncing around the shower likes he's got ants in his pants. we are reminding him to rinse his hair out. Tonight, when I asked him to do that, he did. And then he went over to the plate around the faucet to check his hair out in the "mirror", even twisting around backwards as if to check the back of his head. I thought this was just the funniest thing. Maybe I should clean his "mirror" a bit...

I guess because I had the camera out, he was quite animated and dancing around. Lucky he didn't slip and fall.

They call me the Fireman!

For Grandma, since she loved his attire when we Skyped with them on Sunday night. In the first one, John was showing me his mean face, where he talks through his teeth.

And today's photo that I didn't take: No-Nap Pitcher and the unhappy Momma, who, by the way, officially needs reading glasses (+1.25). It wasn't a very pretty picture this afternoon.

Clickin' Moms

Rarely do I put something on my blog that constitutes advertising.  But I really like this forum so I thought I'd tell you all about it.  I joined it a few years ago and wasn't sure what I'd learn from it.  But I've learned lots, so much that I can't even begin to detail it!  It is a wonderful place with lots of folks, pros, hobbyists, and everyone in between, that are so eager to help you out.  It's a place where there are no stupid questions and where everyone has something to contribute.  It gives me place to go to ask questions about cameras, shooting, props, vendors, or editing without leaving my house.  My eyes will be totally wide open because of this forum if I ever decide photography should be a business for me.  And when I was scared silly about shooting that wedding last month, this forum was where I turned for sound advice and the best tips.

It is a paid forum, but in my opinion, it totally worth the money.  If you'd like to find out more and even join me at the forum, just click the affiliate link below or in my sidebar.  If you join you can use the code FRIEND and get 10% off a subscription.

Bouncing around

We went to see Cousin June today and experience her new trampoline.  The kids had a great time and best of all, no one got hurt in the process.  The kids are not too far apart in weight, so the bouncing didn't get too out of hand.

Even Daddy got into the act after a while!

Wii did it!

Great Aunt Charlotte and Great Uncle John got JHP a Wii game for Christmas. And for the last three nights, he's asked to play the game. He LOVES it! He's slowly getting the hang of the game. At times he gets real silly and jumps around thinking that doing so will make Diego jump. In reality, Diego jumps when John, in his excitedness, pushes the (2) button. I know that it's hard to believe considering the seriousness you see in these photos.
