You'll have to bear with me. This might seem a bit disjointed because it was not written in all one sitting...
John's enjoying the little trip we took outside last week to see the grass.
Let's see...since I last posted, JHP has started crawling, really crawling - "tummy off the floor, get me where I want to go that Mommy and Daddy don't want me to be" crawling. This happened slowly over the last couple of days and then Wednesday he was everywhere! His poor little knees are gonna be red for the next few months. I've got some video that I'll try to get uploaded soon.
And, along with this milestone, there has been some other less enjoyable occurrences. He was sick with nasal discharge and drainage starting Sunday. This was accompanied by a noticeable cough that didn't sound good. He was most bothered on Sunday and the nose stuff lessened rather quickly, but the cough stuck around. He coughed so hard on Monday while I was feeding him, that he threw up (not spit up) on me. I was in shock at the trajectory of the projectile vomit! Wow! Tuesday and Wednesday it was really interrupting his sleep. This was compounded by the fact that suddenly in the last 3 days JHP has decided that he must PROTEST LOUDLY every time you put him in the crib to sleep (naps or otherwise). He sits up in his crib and grabs the rungs and just screams. And it usually doesn't stop for a long time! In addition, he's decided that he doesn't want to be left alone for even a minute. If he's not totally distracted and I step out of view, he has a COW! So as we struggle to get him to sleep, poor thing will be awakened by coughing and then refuse to go back to sleep, whether he's slept 10 minutes or 30. I should note that the longest he's slept during the day this week has been 1 hr & 10 minutes. However, most of the naps have been in the 15 -30 minute range. So JHP is exhausted when it comes time for bed and falls asleep on the bottle. And then he doesn't necessarily sleep restfully because he's coughing. And then doesn't want to go back to sleep right away. Can you see the picture I'm painting?
Well, Wednesday, I decided it was time to see the doctor. I had called the office several times when he's had a runny nose and followed their suggestions, but it never seemed to get us anywhere. So, JHP and I went to see Dr. T Wednesday afternoon. After listening to my sob story, he prescribed some albuterol breathing treatments and some patience & resolve. The breathing treatments shouldn't be that hard. I'll have to work on the other. He suspects that JHP has an excess of mucus and it's aggravating the cough. We'll see...As for the sleeping / clinging issue, he told me to hold firm to our established behavior and JHP will get over it eventually. I told him I was trying, but after he screamed for 45 minutes straight on multiple occasions, I was beginning to wonder about everything I thought I knew about my son.

He looks normal as long as you aren't trying to put him down to sleep.
We went back to the doc on Thurs after MDO called to say JHP wasn't himself and was kinda struggling to breathe. We saw a different doc who gave him some inhalant steroids in addition to the albuterol. He hadn't slept a lot and fell asleep in the car and at the dinner table for the 2nd day in a row. Poor kid - here's the pic I couldn't resist taking. Funny thing was he'd cough and wake up and keep chewing on the sippy cup and then fall asleep again.
Last night was better for sleeping. He woke at 3am again (2nd day in a row) but was only awake for about an hour and didn't scream as much. Of course, I was up for 1.5 hours because I couldn't go back to sleep easily.
I should note that JHP was in a fairly happy mood after the little nap he had on the way home from the doctor's office. He really can't be contained unless you put him in the crib or pac-n-play. He's enjoying his freedom and even decided that I needed help unloading the dishwasher.
It just seems that you can't think you KNOW what's going to happen, because it's gonna change. Even simple things like formula isn't a given anymore. Lately, it either takes him forever to finish the bottle or he quits half was through it, especially if he's distracted. John asked me if this was normal. I told him there is no "normal" anymore. Just have to go with the flow and hope for the best. Today has been better. He's taken two good long naps. Let's hope this doesn't cut into his nighttime sleep.
As for cute, endearing things that I want to remember, JHP has discovered his tongue this week (and yours if you stick it out!). He started a couple of days ago. He even tried to grab my tongue when I showed him mine. I managed to capture one picture so far.

I've uploaded a ton of pictures to the WebAlbums. I was playing with the settings on my camera, so I hope you don't get too bored. I know that the grandparents won't get bored, but for the rest of you :), bear with us. There are some really good ones and some really not so good. On the topic of pictures, I'm going to have to start taking some of the early pictures (less than 3 months old) down because I'm starting to run low on space. If you want to get some of those ordered, get it done. I'll likely start next month.
Hopefully next week will be quieter!
