Moo!

JHP and I went to a big birthday party today for a one-year-old of one of the girls in my Wednesday Bible study. Daddy had to go to work. John enjoyed the party very much. There was so much to see and do. But I had to be there to referee frequently when he decided he was going to hog one of the toys. You can see in this picture that he has two mosquito bites in the same place. The smaller one is a week old. The other one he got yesterday at SNBNA's. I really thought that we would have a slight reprieve from the skeeters with the winter we had, but alas, it's not to be.

The party had a big top circus theme and the party favors were these little masks. John selected the cow. And he wore it for a good while after we got home. He kept mooing. When he finally took it off, his little nose was quite red from the pressure the mask puts on the face. I guess I should've taken a picture of that, too.

Today has been a long day. John didn't finally fall asleep until after 1000pm last night. And he was up at his normal time. We had breakfast and soon went outside to work in the yard doing things like mowing, weeding, sweeping, etc. We didn't take a break to eat snack and so, our punishment was one cranky kid. Being short on sleep from the night before only made matters worse. We managed through lunch and put him down for a nap early, knowing that this party was this afternoon. After an hour, he was still awake. Finally, he did fall asleep, only to have me wake him less than an hour and half later. Given all that, he was really good during the party and this evening. Hopefully, he'll go to sleep soon (he's still awake and it's 840p now) and rest well. What's with this new resistance to sleep?

Squirt

Lately, eating takes a long time with John. He didn't finish dinner tonight at SNBNA's house. So after we got home, he finished off his sandwich. Most nights he doesn't go back to the table to eat more. Tonight he did.

And after he finished, he played with his new markers I got him Thursday. I guess he got carried away and decided to see if these markers worked on him, too. Then he came asking for a towel to wipe it off. I told him he'd have to wait until bath time to get it clean. He was sitting on the toilet before bath when he showed Daddy what he'd done.

Bath time was full of hilarity tonight. John started playing with the little crab squirt toy. I've seen him to this before, but tonight he took it to a new level. He'd fill the crab with water, point it at himself, say "cheese", and squirt himself with it as if it were a camera taking a picture. He did this over and over again.

And he was cracking himself up! At one point he was laughing so hard, I really thought he was going to make himself sick. He even let Daddy have a turn squirting him, laughing all the same. Of course, after all this laughing, it was so hard getting him to settle down for bed.

Oh, and his newest evening activity: taking his pajama bottoms off (because he can). I just had to put them back on him after finding them on the floor. Same thing happened last night.

Flyin'

After a rough patch during the end of dinner, I figured a trip outside would make things a bit better. And it did for a while. Until I suggested we go inside and then John pitched another fit. It was obvious to me that he was tired, but knowing that didn't really help. He carried on and on until I finally convinced him to go in the backyard. Taking pity on John, Daddy went out to keep him company. Things turned around when John got to ride on Daddy's shoulders.

Riding on Daddy's shoulders turned into some flipping, flying, and hanging around upside down, all of which John loves. And the activity turned John's attitude around. The rest of the evening was pleasant and even a bit silly.

One little bit of conversation I'd like to remember from today. At dinner, John had reached over to take my hand and out of the blue said, "Nice to meet you, Mommy", pumping my hand as if shaking it. It took a minute for me to register what he said. Where did he get that from? I returned the greeting, much to his excitement. Then he reached over and said the same to Daddy. Daddy and I just looked at each other and shook our heads. I find it humorous when he says little things that seem out of the ordinary for such a little guy.

I realized the other day that he makes good small talk. You can ask him how he slept and he'll usually say "Pretty good." The same response is given when you ask him how something is that resides on his plate, regardless of whether he's tasted it yet or not. And when we got outside in the evening to get the mail, walking out the front door, he'll usually comment on how "beautiful" it is outside.
